How to Level a Refrigerator — Fix the Door and Stop the Rattle
Published 14 April 2026
A refrigerator that isn't level causes more problems than most people realise. The door swings open on its own or won't stay shut, the door seal makes uneven contact and lets warm air in, the compressor works harder than it needs to, and the whole unit rattles on the floor. All of these problems have the same root cause — and the same fix.
The front-to-back trick: deliberately not perfectly level
Unlike most appliances, a fridge is intentionally set with the front very slightly higher than the back — typically 1–2°. This slight backward tilt uses gravity to help the door swing shut on its own. If you level a refrigerator perfectly flat, the door will stay wherever you leave it. If you tilt it too far forward, the door swings open on its own. The sweet spot is a very slight backward lean.
Side-to-side, however, should be perfectly level — 0.0°. A fridge that leans left or right causes the door to hang unevenly and seals poorly on one side.
Tools for levelling a refrigerator
A flat-head screwdriver or adjustable wrench (for the levelling feet or rollers), and your phone with Spirit Level Online open in the browser.
Step-by-step: levelling the fridge
Pull the fridge away from the wall slightly. You need access to the front feet or rollers and ideally the rear ones too. Most fridges can slide forward on their rear rollers without being fully moved out.
Check the side-to-side level first. Place your phone on top of the fridge and open Spirit Level Online in Surface Mode. Note how far the bubble drifts left or right. This is the first thing to correct.
Locate the levelling feet. Most refrigerators have two adjustable front feet (threaded legs that screw in and out) and two fixed rear rollers. Some models have adjustable rear feet as well — check your manual. Turning a front foot anticlockwise raises that corner; clockwise lowers it.
Adjust the front feet for side-to-side level. Raise or lower the left or right front foot until the left-to-right bubble reading reaches 0.0°. Recheck with the phone each time you adjust.
Set the front-to-back tilt. Now check the front-to-back bubble reading. Aim for the front to be 1–2° higher than the back — the bubble should drift very slightly toward the back of the phone (toward the rear of the fridge). Raise both front feet equally to achieve this tilt without disturbing the side-to-side level you just set.
Test the door. Open the fridge door to about 45° and let go. It should swing gently shut on its own. If it swings open, increase the backward tilt slightly. If it stays put or slams shut, reduce it.
Push the fridge back and do a final check. Sliding the fridge back into position can shift the feet slightly. Place your phone on top again and verify both readings before finishing.
Tip: Check the door seal after levelling. Close the fridge door on a piece of paper. You should feel resistance when pulling the paper out — at every point around the door. If the paper slides out easily on one side, the door gasket isn't sealing properly there. Re-adjusting the tilt or the door hinge usually fixes this. A poor seal costs significantly more in electricity over a year than the time it takes to fix it.
French door and side-by-side fridges
Multi-door refrigerators follow the same principle but have two doors to balance. After levelling the main unit, check that both doors hang at the same height. Most models have adjustable hinges that let you raise or lower individual doors independently. Check your manual for the hinge adjustment mechanism specific to your model.
Fridge still rattling after levelling?
If the fridge vibrates or rattles even after levelling, check that nothing stored on top is vibrating against the wall or surrounding cabinets. Also check the drain pan underneath — it can rattle if it has shifted. If the noise comes from inside during the compressor cycle, that's a separate issue unrelated to levelling.
